The investigation into Gabby Petito’s death took a major turn when the FBI confirmed that her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, had written statements claiming responsibility for the 22-year-old travel vlogger’s death in a notebook found near his body.

Although the case has now been closed, it became one of the most intensely covered crime stories of 2021.

In addition to receiving widespread mainstream media coverage, the story also dominated social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. It was later featured in the hit Netflix docuseries American Murder: Gabby Petito.

Petito’s disappearance dates back to 2021, when she and Laundrie embarked on a cross-country trip in a white Ford van, hoping to experience the trip of a lifetime.

Planning to travel across the United States together, the couple launched a joint travel brand called Nomadic Statik, through which they documented their adventures and shared them on social media.

In August 2021, about a month after starting their van life journey, a police officer in Moab, Utah, responded to a domestic dispute call. The 911 caller reported seeing a man hitting a female in an incident involving Petito and Laundrie.

In publicly released bodycam footage, Petito told officers that she had slapped Laundrie, while the police report described him pushing her away to avoid being hit.

At the time, police ultimately allowed them to continue their trip without criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence to justify them.

However, in September, Petito’s family reported her missing after Laundrie returned alone from their trip and drove her van to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida.

A few days after Gabby was reported missing, North Port police officially named Laundrie a “person of interest” in the case.

However, Laundrie’s family also reported him missing after he left their Florida home.

As the search for Petito continued, authorities discovered human remains at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest on Sept. 19, 2021.

A medical examiner confirmed during a press conference that she had died by strangulation.

The autopsy also indicated that her body had been outdoors for approximately three to four weeks before it was discovered.

Amid public concern over Petito’s death, the FBI announced that human remains discovered at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Florida, belonged to Laundrie.

Authorities also recovered items that would provide crucial evidence in the investigation into Petito’s death.

Near Laundrie’s remains, investigators found a backpack and a notebook containing his written confession to killing his fiancée.

“I ended her life,” a part of the page reads, per ABC7. “I thought it was merciful, that it is what she wanted, but I see now all the mistakes I made.”

Moreover, the eight-page notebook also contained apologies and a suicide note.

Months after the investigation, the FBI released its final investigative update, stating that investigators had not identified anyone other than Laundrie as directly involved in Petito’s death.
