Few songs in modern R&B carry the profound emotional weight of Luther Vandross’s 2003 hit, “Dance With My Father.”

Rooted in the quiet moments of his childhood when his father danced with his family, the track resonated universally. The hauntingly beautiful single solidified its place as a definitive cornerstone of his extraordinary career.

Vandross was just eight years old when his father, Luther Vandross Sr. died due to complications from diabetes. He relayed his story to Richard Marx, who, along with the soul superstar, wrote the song’s lyrics and music.

Marx told Smooth Radio, “I met Luther in the early ‘90s at an American Music Awards show backstage. I was a big fan of his, and he was really sweet to me. It was a little mutual admiration society backstage for a minute. And we exchanged phone numbers.”

“We didn’t work together that much in the first couple of years. He sang background vocals on a couple of my records, which was amazing. He offered to do that, so I took him up on it. He sang on ‘Keep Coming Back’ and some other tracks,” the singer and songwriter continued.

“In 2003, he rang me up one day. He said, ‘I’ve got an idea for a song, and only you can write it for me. And it’s called ‘Dance with My Father.’ All he had was the title,” Marx added.

He concluded, “Luther really felt like ‘Dance with My Father’ would be a hit. But more importantly, he said, ‘This is the most important song of my life. This is my ‘Piano Man’. This is my signature song. This is what I’m going to sing for the rest of my life. This is how I’m going to be associated.'”

Among the featured guest appearances in the song’s timeless video was Beyoncé, who appears alongside her father, Mathew, shortly after teaming up with Luther for a remake of the 1978 soul duet “The Closer I Get to You.” She was joined by an incredible roster of co-stars including Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Babyface, Brandy, Ashanti, Quincy Jones, Wyclef Jean, and Shaquille O’Neal, among others.

“Dance With My Father” earned Vandross four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Best Male R&B Performance. The song peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and.

Luther Vandross died in 2005 at the age of 54. Just as he predicted, the song has become a legacy recording for millions of listeners who connect to its message of love and loss.
