Bears Bits: A Path to Victory Easier Said Than Done, Ozzy, Kyler, More ...Middle East

Another work week is in the books, and another week of preparation for the Bears’ next opponent. All that’s left now is the game itself. Oh, and the quarterback decision, of course. As of now, there is none. It feels like Williams is tracking to start, as long as he gets through the stress test he mentioned and rebounds well tomorrow. For now, he’s listed as questionable, and we wait.

Regardless of whether Williams starts, the key to this game will fall on the defense. The offense will need to be much better than it was in Green Bay, obviously. And I think Williams in the lineup will fix a lot of what’s gone wrong with the offense. Still, they need to contain Atlanta’s weapons. Bijan Robinson feels inevitable, but there’s a path for Chicago to contain Atlanta, and it starts with getting pressure home on Michael Penix Jr. The problem, of course, is that this is the worst week possible to make pressure on the quarterback the central focus on that side of the ball, with Montez Sweat suspended and Dayo Odeyingbo sidelined with a quad injury. If Austin Booker and the remaining defensive linemen can’t pressure Penix, the secondary will be a frustration point again on Monday. The Bears won’t have to see the Packers again until Christmas, but when they do, they’ll have another thing to worry about:

ESPN sources: Packers RB Josh Jacobs is being removed from the NFL’s Commissioner Exempt list on Monday. The investigation will remain open for the NFL so it reserves the right to add further discipline if and when warranted. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 16, 2026 Two more Bears injury notes: Ben Johnson said that Kyler Gordon has done a good job with everything he and the staff have thrown at him. As far as when he’s coming back, Johnson declined to say. He could be activated before the Falcons game, or the Bears could wait until Wednesday to activate him in anticipation of the Patriots game on Thursday night. Either way, we’re nearing a conclusion on the Gordon front, because Wednesday is the final day of his 21-day window. The Bears will have to activate him, trade/release him, or place him on season-ending injured reserve. I don’t see the latter two options happening, so Gordon will likely be back in action Sunday at the earliest or next Thursday. Johnson also said (again) that Ozzy Trapilo is getting close to returning, but this time, he said he could be active on Sunday against the Falcons. That’s good, because we were getting to the annoying point in the whole “he’s close” line of commentary. It’s been that way for about a month, and you get to a point where either he’s playing, or he’s out, and he was never really that close to begin with.

Ozzy Trapilo continues to be off the injury report and practice in full. Could this be the week he finally is active?Ben Johnson: “He’s getting a lot closer.” pic.twitter.com/lAgGiCX24t
