ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT men’s hockey will have host #3 Michigan State at the Blue Cross Arena this weekend for a major early season test for Matt Thomas’s Tigers.
Thomas, who played for RIT for four years, returned to campus last year, boasting a 17-17-2 record in his first season at the helm. Through four games this year, the Tigers are 1-2-1, splitting with conference foe, Niagara to start the season.
“Outside of my wedding day and my kids being born. That’s it. Right? It was the greatest little stretch of life that you can, you can have,” Thomas said about his time playing and and serving as an assistant coach in the late 1990’s at RIT.
He said he enjoys sharing his experiences as a former player with his current team.
“To come back and get the opportunity to give these guys the same experience and be a part of it. It’s pretty thrilling stuff sitting there,” Thomas said.
Goalie Jakub Krbecek said Thomas often talks about his time as a player.
“I think he is unbelievable, coach. He did a great job so far. We’re happy to have him here, though,” junior goalie Jakub Krbecek said.
Through four games this season, the Tigers have a record of 1-2-1. Thomas said the team is still developing, with only four seniors and 18 underclassmen.
“We’ve been exactly what you think a younger team would be like. Really good and really bad, all in the same weekend?” Thomas said.
Making for an early season that emphasizes growth over results.
“We know we’re in a spot where we’re growing. And we just want to do that. We want to get better,” Thomas said.
This weekend, RIT will face Michigan State, the third-ranked team in the country–a chance for the Tigers to test themselves even further.
“You got to learn how to play in these games are great measuring stick games. We got a lot of respect for Michigan State, but we want them to respect us at the end of the night and that’s how we’re,” Thomas said.
Saturday’s game will be played at the Blue Cross Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.
