Boston’s Skinny House is about 10 feet wide at the street and just over 6 feet wide inside in places; in September 2021 it sold for $1.25 million ...Saudi Arabia

Previous owners of the Skinny House in Boston’s North End reportedly had to saw their box spring in half to get it upstairs, according to Atlas Obscura. That is life in a home that is a bit over 10 feet wide at its widest and about 30 feet long, with walls that narrow to just over six feet apart in places.

The house at 44 Hull St. sold in September 2021 for $1.25 million, per the Suffolk County Registry of Deeds, as reported by The Boston Globe. It had been listed at $1.2 million about a month earlier, so it closed $50,000 above asking. CNN reported the price as “more than $1.2 million.” The buyers were a family that wrote a letter explaining why they wanted the home, according to the Globe.

Demand was not a surprise. Listing agent Carmela Laurella said the house “received multiple offers and went under agreement for over list price in less than one week,” as her firm, CL Properties, posted on Facebook. The house had last sold in 2017 for $900,000 after listing at $895,000. Boston 25 News reported that more than 50 groups lined up at that year’s open house.

Inside, it is 1,165 square feet over four floors, with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a private roof deck, per the Globe. The front door faces sideways, off an alley that survived when the rest of the block was rebuilt, according to Boston.com. “It does look bigger when you go in. It has a special feel to it,” Laurella told the Globe.

Odd houses have a way of making a city take notice. A Seattle woman turned down $1 million for her house in 2006, and a five-story building went up around it instead. It might have inspired the house in the movie “Up,” which faced similar circumstances in its story.

The Skinny House is best known for its legend. The story goes that two brothers inherited a plot of land, and one built a large house while the other was away fighting in the Civil War. When the soldier came home, he built the narrow house to block his brother’s light and view. A plaque on the front reads “Spite House,” per TODAY.

City records tell a different story. The Massachusetts Historical Commission says the house is half of a double house likely built around 1857, which was remodeled into three attached houses in 1884, according to Boston.com. The records show no mention of two brothers jointly owning the land.

Rosanne Foley of the Boston Landmarks Commission told Boston.com it is not “100 percent possible” to rule out a spiteful story, which would take deep genealogical research. But she called the commission’s survey form “unusually complete,” and she believes it points away from spite.

The name is older than the Civil War story, too. A 1920 Boston Globe article already called it the “Spite House” and blamed a different legend, in which a Tory builder erected it to block a neighbor’s light, according to North End Page author Adam Balsam. For now, the house belongs to a new family, who can decide for themselves which story to tell.
