Shortly after the announcement, Pillay addressed colleagues at a legal conference in Nuremberg, Germany, where she made a lighthearted remark about Trump’s long-standing desire to win the award.
“If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump,” Pillay told the audience, according to The Independent. Her comment prompted laughter and applause from those gathered at the event.
Pillay’s quip came as Trump has repeatedly highlighted his own diplomatic efforts and expressed interest in receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
According to the Nobel Committee, her contributions to international justice have helped strengthen the rule of law at a time when international institutions face mounting pressure.
Her career includes serving as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as a judge on the International Criminal Court. She also served as the United Nations’ human rights chief from 2008 to 2014.
More recently, Pillay chaired a United Nations commission investigating the war in Gaza. The commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a finding rejected by the Israeli and U.S. governments.
