VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – A man from Oak Park has been ordered to serve one year, or 365 days, in Ventura County Jail for a reckless driving incident that took the lives of Alejandro and Maria Ramirez last year.

Back in May 2025, Oak Park resident Neil Liam Reb was driving a 2024 Jeep Wrangler when hebroadsided a Volkswagen Tiguan at the intersection of Via Las Brisas and Calle Del Prado inNewbury Park. Reb was reportedly driving 89 mph in an area with a posted speed limit of 45 mph. The crash caused major injuries to Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez, and the two were pronounced dead at the scene.

Reb was arrested on June 30th, 2025 following an investigation.

Reb pleaded guilty August 28, 2026, to two counts of felony gross vehicular manslaughter, and also admitted to the special allegation that the crime is a serious felony.

In a press release from the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, it explains that under California law the maximum sentence allowed for the charges in this case is 7 years 4 months in state prison. Prosecutors were seeking 3 years 4 months for guilty pleas to both counts of vehicular manslaughter.

Instead, Reb was sentenced to serve 365 days in Ventura County Jail on Friday.

The family of Alejandro and Maria Ramirez were in court for the sentencing, and their daughters deliver emotional impact statements.

“The pain of losing my parents this way was and still is unbearable,” their oldest daughter wrote. “There was no time to comfort them, hold their hand, to say goodbye, see them, or tell them I love them one last time. Those moments were taken from us."

“Your Honor, a maximum sentence of 365 days in county jail is devastating to our family,”wrote another daughter. “My parents were worth infinitely more than that. Their lives mattered."
