‘Two and a Half Men’ Creator Says Charlie Sheen Made Show a ‘Nightmare’: ‘I Had No Choice But to Shut Down’ ...Saudi Arabia

TV producer and writer Chuck Lorre isn’t holding back about his “nightmare” experience working with Charlie Sheen.

Lorre, dubbed the “King of Sitcoms,” has created/co-created some of the most popular comedies, including Cybill, Mike & Molly, The Big Bang Theory, and Two and a Half Men.

In an excerpt from Lorre’s upcoming memoir, titled Sitcom, published by Vanity Fair, he recalled the final scene of the series.

“The last scene we shot was with Charlie and Melanie Lynskey. He couldn’t remember any of his lines and had to use the furniture to keep himself upright,” he wrote in the book. “Melanie was terrified. It was clear to everyone that this man, whom we’d all grown to love, was in trouble. I had no choice but to shut down the show.”

Lorre and Sheen worked together on the 2003 show Two and a Half Men, which ran for 12 seasons. The Hot Shots! star played Charlie Harper for eight seasons, from 2004 to 2011.

For the first few years, the producer described the show as “a blast to do,” until Sheen “started calling in sick all the time.”

“The typical excuse was food poisoning, usually bad clams. There were a lot of emergency dental appointments,” he wrote. “Once I was informed he would not be attending rehearsal because his BIC lighter had exploded and burned off his eyelashes.”

Lorre claimed the cast and crew “worked in a constant state of anxiety” because they never knew what to expect from him, describing the experience as a “nightmare.”

After Sheen’s last scene, the showrunner informed the actor that the sitcom was ending. Lorre added that CBS executives encouraged Sheen to go to rehab, and he agreed.

“The show would wait for him to get straightened out, only resuming when he was ready. No harm, no foul. He agreed,” he wrote, alleging that the actor was “getting loaded” for the following two days.

In Sheen’s memoir, Book of Sheen, he wrote that he had been using “testosterone cream” that caused him to become a “raging demon” at the time.

Lorre’s memoir, Sitcom hits shelves on Oct. 13.
