Quiet Riot’s New 23-Year-Old Singer Grew Up on Their Cassettes, and It Shows ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

John Torra spent high school listening to Quiet Riot cassettes. Last week, he walked on stage as the band’s lead singer.

The 23-year-old from Long Island made his live debut with the 1980s metal band at the Cherokee Event Center in West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma. The group played a 14-song set that ended with “Cum On Feel the Noize” and “Metal Health (Bang Your Head).“

Early reviews from fans are warm. Wide Open Country reports that commenters on a video of the debut said they were “freaking impressed” with the new singer. Vice adds that some fans compared his voice to that of Kevin DuBrow, the band’s late founding singer.

Torra got the job in a way reminiscent of a reality show. After longtime frontman Jizzy Pearl announced his exit, the band held an open call that drew more than 700 submissions. Torra sent audition videos to management and posted performances online, where they went viral.

Manager Regina Banali, the widow of drummer Frankie Banali, said the online support was noticed but did not decide it. She said “what earned John the gig was his undeniable talent.”

The path there had a bit of a detour, though. Torra auditioned for Skid Row earlier this year and heard nothing back before he made the Instagram video aimed at Quiet Riot.

His taste has always run a few decades behind his classmates. Torra told Rolling Stone that other students did not understand his love of 1980s metal, though his teachers did. He remembered an economics teacher stopping a lesson to tell the class, “if this was 1986, John would be sitting next to me in class.”

Ahead of the first show, Torra told the magazine he knew the night would not be flawless. He said he planned to give full effort and make sure fans went home happy.

He joins bassist Rudy Sarzo, guitarist Alex Grossi and drummer Johnny Kelly. Sarzo played on the band’s biggest moment: Ultimate Classic Rock notes that the 1983 album “Metal Health” was the first heavy metal album to top the Billboard chart. That happened two decades before Torra was born.

Torra previously fronted a New Jersey metal group called Fire ‘N Ice, and played in Long Island bands covering Skid Row, Ratt and Cinderella.

He sounds ready to learn on the job. Torra described himself as a sponge who soaks everything in, and said he expects his bandmates, with their extra years of experience, to guide him.

There will be plenty of chances. Quiet Riot has dates booked into 2027, and the set list from night one suggests Torra will be singing the songs he grew up on for a long time.
