Alabama men’s tennis wrapped up a busy opening stretch of fall tournament play at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery.
From September 18-20, four Crimson Tide players opened the season by competing in the SEC StarkVegas Showdown.
Across three days, Alabama secured a pair of team victories against Vanderbilt and Mississippi State and fell just short against Auburn in a competitive 3-4 contest.
Freshmen Theo Hegarty and Alexander Blus headlined the Crimson Tide’s efforts. Hegarty secured a straight-set victory over Auburn’s Joey Phillips and a three-set win over Vanderbilt’s Roshan Santhosh. Blus won in straight sets against Auburn and Mississippi State, and he and Hegarty also found success in the two doubles matches they played together.
Returnees Yoshka Sborowsky and Rowan Hazratwala also competed in the event and secured their first wins of the season.
“We had a valuable weekend of competition, challenges and the overall ability to figure out solutions to demanding situations. The weather alone presented rough conditions, and our SEC peers are tough outs,” said head coach George Husack at the tournament’s conclusion.
While those four battled in Starkville, four other Alabama players participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In the pre-qualifying draw, Antonio Voljavec went 0-2 in singles matches against North Carolina State and Arizona State. Graduate transfer Braden Hannig was able to pick up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rice University’s Rafael Botran in a consolation match.
In the main draw, returnees Matic Kriznik and Vit Kalina went winless across four combined matches. However, the pair also competed in the qualifying draw for doubles and won a tightly contested 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 match in the consolation bracket.
Despite the early round losses, the coaching staff remains encouraged by the valuable experience gained by those who competed.
“We learned a lot about what it takes to compete against the best players in college tennis. It is still early in the Fall and we have a lot of work to do to keep raising our standards in both practice and competition, while learning to handle difficult moments better,” said assistant coach Ezequiel Gils
Finally, on October 2 and 3, Blus, Hegarty, Sborowsky and Voljavec participated in the 78th annual Blue Gray National Tennis in Montgomery.
The group played two team matches, winning 4-2 against a combination of Memphis and Georgia Tech players while falling to Columbia University, which would go on to win the tournament, 2-4 in the second round.
Blus went 2-0 in singles on the weekend, continuing his strong start to his college career. The duo of Voljavec and Sborowsky also won both of their matches in doubles play.
The Crimson Tide will take the court next Thursday as they compete in the ITA Regional Championship in Auburn.
