“Judgment day for Hasan has finally come,” assistant to the Secretary of Defense and Pentagon spokesman, Sean Parnell, wrote on X.
It was announced on Monday by the Pentagon that Nidal Hasan, who was sentenced to death for the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, a major US Army base that trains and deploys armored forces, will be executed via firing squad. At the time, Hasan was a psychiatrist at the site, and his shooting killed 12 soldiers, one civilian and injured 32 others. The attack took place on Nov. 5, 2009, in a crowded medical building where soldiers were awaiting check-ups and vaccines. It is still the deadliest non-combat attack ever on an American military base.
This will mark the first US military execution by firing squad since Private Eddie Slovik in 1945. Executed near Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France, Slovik was convicted of deserting his unit in Europe during WWII. The last overall execution carried out by the US military was Private John A Bennett’s in 1961, who was hanged after the rape and attempted murder of an 11-year-old girl in Austria.
The time and place of the execution for Hasan have not been announced yet, but Army policy states that executions most often happen within 150 days of the president approving it, but not sooner than two months. President Donald Trump approved the execution after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the recommendation on Monday. Hasan, 56, is one of four death row inmates in the Army justice system.

Hasan first started his career as a medical intern and resident at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC, but many concerns about his performance and behavior were raised, many describing him as “anti-American.” Before the shooting, an investigation was conducted by the FBI due to other instances, but they eventually concluded that he was not a threat.
On November 5, 2009, Hasan reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar!” which means “God is great”, then opened fire in the Soldier Readiness Center of Fort Hood, which is located in Killeen, Texas. After shooting and killing 13 people and injuring more than 30, Department of the Army police officer Mark Todd shot Hasan several times, then cuffed him. Hasan was taken to an ICU unit in San Antonio and survived. The attack lasted for a total of 10 minutes, and he was charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder.
He later admitted during his court-martial in 2013 that he was the gunman and apologized for “any mistakes,” believing that he was protecting Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Controversially, the Army decided not to charge Hasan with terrorism, even though the Senate described the shooting as “the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil” since 9/11.
Death by a firing squad is rare, but an execution via this method was used in South Carolina just last year. Brad Sigmon, who murdered his ex-girlfriend’s parents in 2001, was the first person executed this way in 15 years. Two other firing squad executions took place in 2025 as well.
Dubbed “Operation Resolute Justice,” Army officials will coordinate with the FBI to transfer prisoners to the federal execution facility in Terre Haute, Indiana, where the Department of Justice has carried out multiple executions during Trump’s first term. Army regulation states that at least two media outlets can be selected to witness the execution.
Hasan is incarcerated at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Adam Telle, who serves as Acting Secretary of the Army, decides the time and location of Hasan’s execution.
