The Alabama volleyball team traveled to Austin, Texas on Sunday to take on the University of Texas Longhorns at Gregory Gymnasium.
The Crimson Tide scored at least 20 points in each set and achieved their best Southeastern Conference performance this season, bringing the No. 8 ranked team in the nation to almost five full sets. The team played sound defense, contributing 12 blocks for the second match in a row.
“I was incredibly pleased by the effort our team today,” said head coach Ranshinda Reed. “All we need to focus on is a little things, cleaning up chaotic blaze and continue to establish production with our attackers.”
Junior outside hitter Leilia Toailoa and freshman outside hitter Tea Simic added three aces for the Crimson Tide. Junior setter Hannah Parant secured 33 assists, and senior libero and defensive specialist Dionii Fraga had 12 digs.
Senior middle blocker Lily Gervase contributed 10 kills and seven blocks for the Crimson Tide. She recorded double-digit kills in her second match this season and has recorded at least four blocks in her last three matches.
“I think that Lily [Gervase] knows that she’s more of an offensive middle and she wanted to continue to build her game and she knows that defense is something that she has been putting a lot of effort into and we’re seeing it out there on the court,” Reed said. “She did some really beautiful things against some very talented athletes and I have been proud of how she’s competed this weekend.”
Alabama held the Longhorns to under a .180 hitting percentage in the first two sets and limited them to 35 digs, their second-lowest total of the season.
The Crimson Tide went 0-2 on their trip to Texas. It will look to bounce back, hosting the South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday at 6 p.m CT. The match can be streamed on ESPN+.
