Cullen Kahl of Sprint, Texas has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic careers at Cal beginning in fall 2028. Kahl is the #13 ranked recruit in the boys high school class of 2028.
“I am honored and extremely grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic career at The University of California, Berkeley! I want to thank my mom, dad, sister, and all of my supportive extended family for always showing up for me, sacrificing time and resources, and taking me to different competitions around the country. I would also like to thank Coach Stu for getting me to where I am today, and Coach Shana for pushing me to always do better from day one. Shout out to my teammates, mentors, and everyone who has played a part in my journey! Finally, I would like to give a huge thank you to Coach Dave, Coach Noah, and the entire Cal swimming staff for giving me this amazing opportunity!

Kahl swims for Magnolia Aquatic Club and finished his long course season at Summer Juniors. There he swam to a win in the 200 IM with a 2:00.43. He also was 2nd in the 400 IM in a lifetime best 4:18.27 and had another ‘A’ final appearance in the 200 breast as he swam a 2:15.07 for 5th.
A week earlier, Kahl swam a lifetime best 2:00.28 200 IM at U.S. Summer Nationals for 18th. That was his only event of the meet. Kahl is a member of USA Swimming’s National Junior Team.

200 IM: 1:47.78 400 IM: 3:49.65 100 breast: 55.17 200 breast: 1:59.58The Cal men captured the 2026 ACC team title and went on to finish 7th at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Yamato Okadome notably swam to NCAA titles in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. The team just kicked off their 2026-2027 season by finishing 2nd at the Match #3 of the College Swimming League (CSL).
Based on his best times, Kahl is a strong addition to the team’s IM and breaststroke groups. His best time in the 400 IM would have been 5th on the team’s roster this past season. Even with two years until his arrival, Kahl is just off the 3:48.98 it took to make it back in the 400 IM at the 2026 ACC Championships.
Kahl is the 3rd top 20 commitment for Cal in the boys high school class of 2028. He joins #1 ranked Kai Joyner who primarily swims distance free and #9 ranked Grant Bellin who primarily swims backstroke.
