The University of Virginia and the U.S. Naval Academy raced today, and the University of Virginia women dominated the meet, led by freshman Jessica Thompson, while Navy won most of the events on the men’s side

The meet was an exhibition, which means it was not scored.

Women’s Recap

South African freshman Jessica Thompson helped lead the charge for the Virginia women, who were swimming a roster that was missing many of their top athletes.

The Cavaliers started the morning off with a win in the 400 medley relay. Their ‘C’ team of Alyssa Sagle (52.05), Smilte Plytnykaite (58.90), Lana Pudar (52.30), and Jessica Thompson (48.36) stopped the clock in 3:31.61 to win the event by two seconds over the UVA ‘B’ team.

The ‘B’ team was made up of Berit Berglund (53.58), Molly Workman (59.76), Lawson Ficken (52.77), and Nina Jazy (47.84), and they swam 3:33.95.

The UVA ‘C’ team took 3rd with Roos Rottink (53.40), Sara Czirjak (1:02.64), Olivia Hine (52.91), and Jana Pavalic (48.32).

Navy’s team of Ela Habjan (55.05), Corinne Warriner (1:01.66), Elsie Delacruz (56.51), and Erin Miller (50.22) took 4th in 3:43.44.

Thompson went on to also pick up two individual event wins. She started in the 50 backstroke, where she swam 23.86 to finish seven tenths ahead of teammate Alyssa Sagle‘s 24.59. In the 100 IM, she swam 54.36 to touch about three tenths ahead of Molly Workman, who swam 54.62 for 2nd.

She also finished 2nd in the 50 free, swimming 21.79 to come in just eight hundredths behind senior Melissa Nwakalor‘s 21.71.

Junior Emma Redman also picked up multiple event wins, swimming 1:59.93 to win the 200 IM and 2:12.12 to win the 200 breaststroke. In the 200 IM, she finished about a second-and-a-half ahead of Katie Christopherson, who swam 2:01.51 for 2nd, and was about two-and-a-half seconds off the 1:57.25 she swam last February.

Redman’s 200 breast time of 2:12.12 was almost two seconds ahead of Navy’s Marley Barnard, who finished 2nd in 2:13.81. This was a two second add from the 2:10.48 she swam in November of last year.

Fellow junior Bailey Hartman swept the longer freestyle events. In the 500 freestyle, she swam 4:42.65 to set the top time by 13 seconds over Lily Gormsen‘s 4:55.60 in 2nd place. Hartman’s best is 4:33.72 from December of 2022.

In the 200 free, Hartman swam 1:45.85 to finish almost two seconds ahead of teammate Molly Workman‘s 1:47.39. This was about three seconds off her best of 1:42.64.

Finally, UVA wrapped up the meet with the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay. The ‘B’ team of Nina Jazy (48.52), Roos Rottink (49.43), Jana Pavalic (48.06), and Olivia Hine (48.89) swam 3:14.90 to touch a little less than two seconds ahead of the ‘A’ team of Melissa Nwakalor (48.47), Lawson Ficken (48.78), Smilte Plytnykaite (49.62), and Caden Martin (49.68), who swam 3:16.55.

Navy took 3rd with their team of Kaitlyn Landers (52.66), Erin Miller (51.27), Valentina Fraga (51.11), and Samantha Clifford (51.64).

All Other Women’s Event Winners:

50 breast: Molly Workman (UVA) — 28.04 200 fly: Lana Pudar (UVA) — 1:56.77 200 back: Roos Rottink (UVA) — 1:54.66 50 fly: Lawson Ficken (UVA) — 23.57

Men’s Recap

Just like the Virginia women, the Virginia men rested a lot of their top swimmers including sophomore duo Maximus Williamson and Thomas Heilman.

The men’s meet opened with the Naval Academy sweeping the top two spots of the men’s 400 medley relay.

The Navy ‘A’ team of Ben Irwin (46.92), Juan Mora (52.94), Lachlan Andrew (47.83), and Kellan Pattison (44.12) swam 3:11.81 to finish a little under two seconds ahead of their ‘B’ relay of Luke Lamb (47.21), Jack Ussery (54.44), Alex Park (47.42), and Matt Beehler (44.34) who swam 3:13.41.

UVA’s ‘B’ relay of Nathan Carr (50.49), Danis Volontir (53.34), Sebastien Sergile (46.43), and Josh Howat (44.89) swam 3:15.15 for 3rd.

Juan Mora, the breaststroker on the Navy ‘A’ relay, won all three of his individual events. In the 50 breast, he swam 24.65. In the 200 breast, he was 1:58.53, and in the 100 IM, he swam 49.17.

Virginia’s Davin Lindholm took 2nd in the 50 breast (24.81) and fellow Virginia swimmer Danis Volontir swam 2:00.59 to finish 2nd in the 200 breast. In the 100 IM, Navy teammate Aaron Mendoza swam 50.20 to take 2nd.

Lamb, who led off the ‘B’ relay went on to win two individual events, swimming 21.92 in the 50 backstroke and 21.70 in the 50 fly. In the 50 back, he beat Ben Irwin‘s 22.07 by just over a tenth and in the 50 fly, he beat teammate Dean Jones, who swam 21.72.

Jones also picked up two event wins in the 500 free and 200 fly. In the 500 free, he swam 4:20.75 to finish a little under two seconds ahead of teammate Chase Maier who swam 4:22.44 for 2nd.

In the 200 fly, he swam 1:45.72 for another near two second win over Virginia’s Nathan Carr, who swam 1:47.43 for 2nd.

The men’s 400 freestyle relay went to Navy again with their team of Luke Lamb (43.85), Xavier Sohovich (45.12), Martin Perecinsky (42.94), and Andre Brooks (45.06) swimming 2:56.97.

They finished just one tenth ahead of the Virginia ‘A’ relay team of Liam Mac Colla (45.58), Sebastien Sergile (42.93), Josh Howat (44.68), and Noah Powers (43.88), who swam 2:57.07 for 2nd.
