Cadillac’s first Formula 1 season is about to enter a particularly unforgiving phase, with the fledgling team facing the opening round of a punishing triple-header in Baku before races in Malaysia and Singapore.
For team principal Marcin Budkowski, the challenge extends well beyond what happens on track. Cadillac will bring a few aerodynamic upgrades to Azerbaijan and will benefit from Ferrari’s latest-spec power unit for Sergio Perez, but behind those developments lies a logistical test for an operation still finding its feet at the highest level of motorsport.
The compressed schedule over the next three weeks will place Cadillac’s entire operation under strain, from the travelling race crew to the people producing and supporting the cars back at base.
"The sequence of flyaway races over the final few months of the Formula 1 season puts significant pressure on a racing team," Budkowski said.
"There is pressure on our trackside team as they crisscross the globe; pressure on our manufacturing operation to keep up with the demands of multiple races compressed into a short period; and pressure on the race-support activities at the factory, where staff will work extremely unsociable hours to support the race team, often on the other side of the world.
"We have some new small aerodynamic upgrades to try in Free Practice as we continue to develop this year's car. As planned, Checo will also run the new spec Ferrari power-unit."
For a team in its maiden campaign, the relentless sequence offers a particularly useful stress test. Cadillac must continue developing its current car while simultaneously demonstrating that its growing infrastructure can cope with the demands of a full F1 season.
"It is a great test for our new team – and one that we relish. In only a decade Azerbaijan has developed a reputation for entertaining and dramatic races, and we have two drivers who are masters of the Baku City Circuit.
"It is a great place to start the run to the end of the year," the Cadillac boss concluded.
Perez and Bottas bring Baku pedigree
The choice of Baku as the starting point hardly lacks intrigue for Cadillac’s driver pairing.
Perez has enjoyed strong success around the 6.00km street circuit, winning in 2021 and 2023 while also collecting podiums in 2016, 2018 and 2022. The Mexican is therefore returning to a venue where he has repeatedly found a way to extract a result.
But his latest opportunity comes after a frustrating retirement in Madrid, although Perez believes Cadillac had shown its strongest race pace of the season before that setback.
"Our race in Madrid was going very well until we had to retire the car, possibly the strongest we've been all season, and I'm eager to get back out and try to replicate that this weekend,” he said.
“Baku is a circuit where I've had a lot of success in the past, and the hope is to hit the ground running, get into a good rhythm across the practice sessions, and deliver a good result the team deserves."
Bottas is hardly short of Baku memories either. The Finn won from pole in 2019 and finished runner-up at the circuit in 2017, while his 378 km/h speed during practice for the 2016 European Grand Prix remains one of the most remarkable speed figures recorded at an F1 weekend.
He knows, however, that Baku demands far more than commitment down its enormous straight.
"It's always an eventful week in Azerbaijan," he added. "The circuit has the longest straight in F1, but that doesn't take away from the rest of the track, which is very technical.

“I've also got some great memories from Baku, having won there in 2019, so it's always a special place to come back to."
With its latest aerodynamic tweaks, a fresh Ferrari power unit and two drivers carrying plenty of Baku experience, Cadillac will have plenty to evaluate on Friday.
But as the team heads into the season’s most demanding logistical stretch, the bigger test may be whether its rapidly expanding operation can keep pace with the calendar.
