Before an MLB team can play crucial games in October, they have to play “meaningful games in September.” The Colorado Rockies are doing just that in the final week of the regular season. Really.
Okay, so the games aren’t all that meaningful for the Rockies, who – unless they rip off a six-game winning streak to end the season – will lose at least 100 games for the fourth straight year. They’re playing only for pride at this point. But their opponents – the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks, and the AL Central’s Chicago White Sox – have much more at stake; both of their opponents are fighting for their playoff lives as we come down the home stretch.
The D-Backs need nothing short of a sweep of Colorado at Coors Field to stay in the race before they meet up for a three-game series against the team they’re chasing for the final wild-card spot in the upcoming NL playoffs, the San Diego Padres. Currently, the Padres hold a five-game lead, so the series with the Rockies at Coors Field is critical for former teammate Nolan Arenado and his Diamondbacks.
The ChiSox, who lost 121 games two years ago and hit triple digits in the loss column again last season, will still be fighting for their division title and/or a wild-card spot when the Rockies arrive this coming weekend. So the Colorado series is huge for the south-siders as well.
The irony would be thick if the Rockies could play spoiler – first within their division, then against the team they’re trying to emulate. Imagine if they ruined the season for the team they were “chasing” just last season for the all-time losses record?
Keep in mind that in these situations, it’s often the team with nothing to lose – in this case, Colorado – that plays loose and free, while the team in the playoff hunt is feeling the pressure. Regardless, it’s a good situation for the young Rockies players to find themselves in; to at least get the feel for what it’s like to play under the spotlight this late in the year.
It’s been a miserable last few weeks for Colorado – just 2-8 in their last 10 games and 7-23 in their last 30 contests. While they’ve made tangible improvements from the 2025 train wreck season, it’s hard to watch them right now and feel like they’re going to be able to replicate what Chicago has done in the AL Central and be better than a .500 team next season without a lot of reinforcements arriving to help out on the mound.
Silver linings? The Rockies should end the season having made something around a 15-game improvement from last season’s disaster. Their “run differential” this season isn’t good (-177 going into the final week) but it’s not last year’s mind-boggling -424, either. They’ll finish last again in the NL West, of course, but not by that wide of a margin. The San Francisco Giants are just seven games ahead of the Rockies with six games to play.
Players like Jake McCarthy, TJ Rumfield, Cole Carrigg, Hunter Goodman and a few more position players have had really good seasons. Goodman could eclipse the 40 home run mark this week. Rumfield should be a candidate for NL Rookie of the Year, and McCarthy looks like a future standout at the top of the order.
But the kind of improvement the White Sox made began on the pitcher’s mound, and that’s not an area where you can look and see better things ahead for Colorado in the immediate future. There are several young arms that need better coaching and development than they’ve gotten to this point, and need to hope they can land a couple new veterans that can help stabilize things more next season.
If that doesn’t happen, any meaningful games the Rockies play in September of next season will feature Colorado trying to play spoiler once again.
