Despite Mercedes’ dominant position at the top of the championship standings, Toto Wolff is refusing to let recent success soften the team’s approach as Formula 1 enters a punishing stretch of the season.
Kimi Antonelli’s victories at the Madring and Monza have given the Silver Arrows additional significant momentum, yet Wolff believes those results say little about what awaits them in Baku.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix launches the first of three triple-headers that will test the teams across a relentless sequence of races in Malaysia and Singapore.
For a Mercedes operation fighting to protect its championship position, the margin for complacency is effectively non-existent.
Three races, little room for mistakes
Wolff was encouraged by the outcome of the previous two weekends, but stressed that Mercedes’ underlying assessment of the competitive picture has not changed.
"The last two race weekends have delivered good results, but they don't change our assessment of where we stand," he said.
"There are several teams capable of fighting at the front on any given weekend, and in Madrid, we performed well but also benefited from things falling our way during the race. We are realistic about that."
That realism will be particularly important as the workload intensifies. With races arriving in rapid succession, Mercedes will have precious little breathing space to diagnose problems, make adjustments and recover from setbacks.
"Now we head into the first of three triple-headers to end the season. It will be a demanding period for the whole team, both at the factories and trackside.
"There is very little time to reset between races, so preparation, reliability, and operational execution become even more important. These are the moments where our championship position can be strengthened or lost," he explained.
Baku will quickly expose any weaknesses
The opening challenge is Baku, a circuit that gives the teams little opportunity to hide shortcomings. Its huge straight demands efficiency and top speed, while the braking zones and the narrow, slow-speed section around the old city place very different demands on the car.
"We start in Baku," he said of the upcoming stretch of events. "It is one of the most unusual circuits on the calendar. It asks a lot from the car and the drivers.
"You need good straight-line speed, confidence in the braking zones, and a car that can handle the low-speed corners through the old city. Recent results have been encouraging, but they don't guarantee anything. Baku will expose any weakness very quickly.
"We have to approach the weekend with humility, do the basics well, and earn every point," Wolff concluded.
For Mercedes, the message is clear: the championship lead may provide some breathing room on paper, but the next three races could quickly turn that advantage into a far more demanding proposition.
