Lane Francis of Richmond, Virginia, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Virginia for 2028-29, bringing their five-day haul to six top-ranked recruits. She wrote on social media:
“I’m so excited and honored to share my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Virginia! Endless thanks to my incredible family, teammates, coaches, and teachers who push me everyday to become the best version of myself. I would like to give special thanks to Coach Mike Julian and Coach Adam Moss for the extra guidance and encouragement. I would also like to thank Coach Todd and the entire UVA coaching staff for this amazing opportunity. GO HOOS!! ”
Francis is an “Honorable Mention” recruit from our Way Too Early list of top girls’ swimmers from the high school class of 2028. One of the best sprinters in the cohort, she is also an elite backstroker, as evidenced by her gold medal in the 100 back at Junior Pan Pacs this summer.
She attends Freeman High School and swims year-round with NOVA of Virginia Aquatics.
Francis had a breakthrough meet at Winter Juniors East last December, dropping half a second in the 50 free to place 18th (22.75). She also notched PBs in the 200 free (1:50.06), 50 back (25.58), 100 back (53.60 for 14th place), 200 back (1:55.25 for 6th), and 200 IM (2:01.89). Two months later, she won the 50 free (22.64) and 100 back (53.67) and contributed anchors of 22.4 and 22.5 on the winning 200 free and 3rd-place 200 medley relays at the VHSL Class 5 State Championships. Francis wrapped the short-course season at NCSA Spring Championships, where she placed top 8 in the 50/100 free and 50/100/200 back and 11th in the 100 fly. She lowered her best SCY times to 49.86 in the 100 free, 24.82 in the 50 back, 52.37 in the 100 back, and 54.47 in the 100 fly.
Similarly, Francis had marked improvements in her events during the 2026 long-course season, beginning with the 50 breast, 50 fly, and 100 fly at Virginia Swimming LSC’s Senior Championships in July and finishing with the 50 free (25.62), 50 back (28.76), 100 back (1:00.78), and 200 back (2:10.99) at U.S. Nationals. Selected to represent Team USA at the 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, she won the 100 back title (1:00.47), was runner-up in the 200 back (2:11.78), and placed 11th in the 50 back (28.74) and 13th in the 50 free (26.15).

With 2 years left to continue to improve her times, she is already within scoring range at the conference level in the 50 free, 100 back, and 200 back, and she’s not far off in the 100 free (it took 48.91 in the 100 free), 100 fly (53.31), and 200 IM (1:59.35).
