The 20th century was filled with great music in all different genres, from rock and blues to soul and pop. But there were some songs that had a stronger impact than others, both on the music industry and the world itself.
At the end of the 20th century, the American performing rights organization, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), composed a list of what it declared to be the “Top 100 Songs of the Century.” The list was based on “the most played songs on American radio and television,” as the organization defined it.
In the sixth spot on the list is a song that came out in 1968 from soul legend Otis Redding. The song, called “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” is a true classic, but it also has extra significance due to the fact that Redding recorded it three days before his untimely death in a plane crash in 1967. He co-wrote the song with Steve Cropper as well.
The song was released the year after his death, and it became the first posthumous No. 1 hit in America. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” also peaked at No. 3 in the U.K., South Africa, and New Zealand. It took the fourth spot on the yearly Billboard top songs chart.
Redding’s hit track earned him two posthumous Grammys as well, for Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

The legacy of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” only grew over the years after its release. By 1999, it was the sixth most-played song of the past century. The five songs reportedly played more than Redding’s hit were “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “Stand By Me,” “Yesterday,” “Never My Love,” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” in the top spot.
Along with “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” Redding also had many other hits during his lifetime. This includes “Try a Little Tenderness,” “Respect,” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now),” among others.
