News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A 54-year-old man died a day after he was injured while riding an e-bike in a two-vehicle hit-and-run crash in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge neighborhood, authorities said.

Juan Martin Marquez Luna of Chicago died from the injuries he sustained in the crash around noon on Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

The deadly crash occurred around 5:15 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of South Archer Avenue and South Laramie Avenue, police said. The driver of a black sedan was turning at an intersection on the block when they were struck by the driver of a blue pickup truck. After striking the sedan, the pickup truck driver then struck Marquez Luna and fled the scene, police said.

Marquez Luna was transported to a local hospital after the crash, where he was initially listed in critical condition, police said. He died the following day.

Debris, separated tire and a mangled e-bike could be seen left in the street in a photo of the aftermath of the crash.

Police are continuing to investigate.

An 84-year-old woman, Maria Ochoa Flores, was killed in May 2025 when she was run over in a two-car collision in the same intersection.

Marquez Luna is at least the fourth person to be struck and killed by a driver while biking in Chicago this year.

In April, Damian Gomez, 18, was struck and killed while biking by a speeding driver near West 63rd Street and South Kedzie Avenue on the border of Chicago’s Marquette Park and Chicago Lawn neighborhoods. Then, in June, 35-year-old Riley O’Neil, a Chicago city employee who led its bike parking program for years, was struck and killed while biking in Bridgeport.

Several e-bike riders have also been killed in the suburbs this year, including Tyler Waldal, a 14-year-old boy who was killed while riding an e-moto when he was involved in a crash with an SUV driver in Wauconda in late July, and 19-year-old Louis Toaquiza was killed in mid-June while riding an e-bike in Franklin Park when he was involved in a crash with a vehicle driven by a 63-year-old man.
