Pop star Zara Larsson just found out that the Trump administration used her hit song ‘Midnight Sun’ as the background track on a pro-ICE, anti-immigration TikTok video. And like a growing list of musicians who did not consent to the White House using their songs, Larsson has some pretty strong words for the president.
The official White House TikTok account posted a clip on Wednesday night featuring ICE arrests set to Larsson’s catchy summertime tune. But that’s not all. also included a caption that co-opted her “Never ending midnight sun” lyrics, changing the words to “Never ending deportations.”
Larsson’s fans immediately expressed their outrage, commenting, “Y’all are deplorable”, “Zara is going to be so p***ed,” and Oh Zara’s gonna haaateeee this.” Yes, Zara did hate this. And the Swedish singer/songwriter made her own TikTok video, clapping back at Trump’s White House.
Shortly after the administration posted its clip, Larsson shared a video, starting off by making the “L” (loser) sign on her forehead and saying, “I don’t even know what to say. I saw some comments; I got tagged in this obviously.”
She continued, explaining, “You know what, I’m just sad. I’m just really sad. That just really makes me sad to see that. Genuinely, like my heart’s heavy. Because I wish I could speak to whoever made this video; I wish I could talk to you. And I wish I could help you remember that you and I, we aren’t that different at all. And we’re not that different from the people in this video either.”
The ‘Lush Life’ singer added, “The biggest difference between us is that we were dealt a different hand in life. I consider myself so lucky with the life that I’ve been dealt. The fact that I was born in Sweden, that I have health care, that I’ve had an education. I’ve had all these opportunities just sort of laid out in front of me. I can travel. I get to do all of these amazing things. That’s luck. And there are people out there who are not that lucky.”
Larsson’s critical words for the White House didn’t end there. She went on to say, “And they want to have a better life for their families or for themselves and their children. And I just don’t understand how it could be the worst thing in the world to be an undocumented immigrant. If you want to talk about politics and immigration politics, fine. But that’s really not what this is. This video is so dehumanizing. These people in this video, they’re real people.”
When it comes to using this particular song, Larsson points out, “I don’t understand why you would do this video…especially to this song, which is about feeling connected to nature and feeling connected to the universe, and to people essentially. And this just creates this massive divide between people. I just don’t get it.”
The Grammy-nominated performer is just one in a long list of performers who have condemned the Trump administration’s unauthorized use of their music, including Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Noah Kahan, Tom Petty, Pharrell Williams, and Katy Perry.
As of now, the White House has not removed Larsson’s song from the TikTok video.
