Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey spoke to Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard as the club winds down its poor 2026 campaign. He spoke on a number of topics but acknowledged that the bullpen has been an issue this year and that next year will be different. “Yeah, we’re going to have to address the bullpen,” Posey said.
“I think [with] hindsight, it’s pretty easy to say,” Posey said. “We probably should have had a little bit more focus on that. … I think ideally the hope would be to try to add somebody that’s done it for a while — a veteran or two down there — that you can have some of these younger guys continue to develop and maybe look towards as a steward to help them continue to develop.”
The bullpen has undoubtedly been an issue this year. The team’s relievers have posted a collective 4.35 earned run average, putting them in the bottom third of the league. Their 9.8% K-BB% is better than only the Royals and Rockies.
It didn’t take a soothsayer to see this coming. The Giants traded away Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers at last year’s deadline and then lost Randy Rodríguez to Tommy John surgery shortly thereafter. That subtracted three of their best bullpen arms. As noted in MLBTR’s Offseason In Review, their offseason additions mostly consistent of injury reclamation projects like Sam Hentges and Jason Foley and there weren’t many reasons to be optimistic. It’s not exactly a shock that this year’s group was subpar.
Going into next year, there should be even more work to do, as the Giants did some more selling at this year’s deadline. Caleb Kilian and Erik Miller were sent out of town in separate deals, to the Phillies and Red Sox, respectively.
Based on Posey’s comments, it seems the target will be experience, which makes sense. The current group is fairly green. Of the guys in the bullpen at this moment, no one had more than four years of service time at the start of the season. Foley was the only guy past the two-year mark on Opening Day and he missed the entire 2025 season due to shoulder surgery.
Though the Giants are looking for established guys, it would be a surprise if they jumped to the top of the market and went after someone like Adrián Morejón or David Bednar. Those guys would make more sense on surefire contenders who are looking to take another step forward. For a Giants team coming off a season where they will likely lose more than 90 games, they might opt for more modest additions, though hopefully more aggressive ones than last offseason.
There are dozens of potential options out there. The trade market always has arms available. In terms of this winter’s crop of free agents, there are plenty of serviceable veterans who shouldn’t break the bank. Enyel De Los Santos, Kevin Ginkel, Andrew Kittredge, Jonathan Loáisiga and Paul Sewald are a few fairly random names of the dozens of possibilities.
Beyond that, there are still lots of unknowns about the upcoming offseason for the Giants. The club isn’t exactly rebuilding but has finished above .500 just once in the past decade. They have a number of large contracts on the books which would be hard to move. Adding those deals took some aggression but the Giants had a very mild offseason going into 2026. The farm system is in good shape but their best guys are teenagers who are years away from the majors. It’s unclear whether the club is more focused on near-term or long-term success. Either way, the bullpen will hopefully be better next year.
On the position player side of things, Posey said he felt good about the current group, though it’s perhaps notable that his comments focused on the infield core of Rafael Devers, Bryce Eldridge, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames. Between those four and Casey Schmitt potentially taking over for Luis Arraez at second, the infield group is fairly settled, with guys like Marcelo Mayer, Christian Koss, Shay Whitcomb and Jonah Cox also around to help.
The outfield seemingly has more uncertainty. The Harrison Bader deal didn’t pan out as he played poorly before hitting the injured list and later got into a scooter accident that may have done long-term damage to his foot and soured the relationship between player and club. Heliot Ramos was traded at the deadline. Jung Hoo Lee is having a down year but is signed through 2029. There’s an opt-out after 2027 but he probably wouldn’t trigger it based on his performance to date. Drew Gilbert is having a decent season. Guys like Grant McCray, Turner Hill, Víctor Bericoto and others are also in the mix.
As for Posey himself, he is winding down the second season of a three-year deal. He says he hasn’t yet had any extension talks with the ownership group about staying beyond 2027 but, as Kawakami points out, Posey is part of that ownership group. If he wants to stay, he can probably make it happen, though the public relations aspect might become more of a challenge if next year is another dud.
