ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new study shows 70% of Monroe County school buildings tested above state limits for lead in drinking water.
Environment America Research & Policy Center and the New York Public Interest Research Group co-released a new report on their websites. It contains statewide and county-by-county data for lead in cooking and drinking water.
“This is unacceptable,” said David Masur, senior advocate with the Environment America Research and Policy Center. “Medical research is crystal clear. There is no safe level of lead. Consuming water contaminated with lead affects brain development, leads to learning disabilities, hearing and speech problems and lower IQ.”
The new report reinforces concerns of New York’s “C” grade for lead in schools’ water in 2023. Additionally, the report says 12,425 water outlets in the state’s public schools tested above the allowable threshold for lead.
