ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police have released new details about the arrest of a man accused of killing 77-year-old Marc Stekloff.
Jonathan Shearin is accused of stabbing Stekloff almost 40 times on July 1. Shearin was arrested the next day in Wayne County for assaulting six other people. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow learned how RPD was able to connect Shearin to the killing.
Captain Frank Umbrino with the Rochester Police Department said Stekloff’s body was found July 3 in an apartment building on North Union Street. Once investigators got surveillance of the suspect, Umbrino said it didn’t take long to realize it was Shearin.
From there, RPD began reaching out to other agencies.
“The departments are always sharing information, especially in cases like this. So we in fact sent a our crime analysis center sent a flier out. We were quickly contacted by Wayne County detectives saying, hey, this is the guy that we just arrested,” Umbrino said.
RPD said after the killing, Shearin stole Stekloff’s car. Officers recovered it on July 4 on Hudson Avenue thanks to surveillance video.
“We recovered the vehicle in the 1100 block of Hudson Avenue. And because of surveillance cameras again we were actually able to recover some critical evidence that was disposed of in a garbage can in that neighborhood,” Umbrino said.
On July 20, RPD posted photos of Shearin, asking for help identifying him as part of its investigation into Stekloff’s death.
“That we need to play sometimes. And we did get a ton of calls on it. It kind of wasn’t hard to see that he was the same guy whose booking photo was put out a couple days ago. But there’s legal reasons why we do certain things,” Umbrino said.
Umbrino said investigators haven’t found any previous connection between Shearin and Stekloff, but they did have a brief friendly exchange before the killing.
“What we believe may have happened is, is that the suspect could have asked him to use his phone, use the bathroom or something like that. And, you know, knowing Mark and what I’ve heard about Mark, you probably was just trying to be a good neighbor and helping them out,” Umbrino said.
Captain Umbrino said the motive is unclear, but violence like this is rarely random.
“There’s oftentimes other underlying factors, whether it be mental health, drug abuse, or a combination of both of them. You know, the mental health crisis that we’re on that we’re going through right now is just crazy,” Umbrino said.
RPD said Shearin is from Dundee in Yates County and isn’t sure what he was doing in Rochester. Shearin had been in Wayne County Jail since his July 2 arrest. After being indicted for the killing, Shearin was remanded to Monroe County Jail.
Captain Umbrino said if Wayne County sheriffs hadn’t arrested Shearin when they did, there’s no doubt there would’ve been more victims. Shearin was on parole for previous burglary convictions when he was arrested for the killing and assaults.
