Four-time Georgia high school state champion Katie Kessell has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Florida Atlantic University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am beyond excited and grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Florida Atlantic University! I would like to thank my coaches, friends and teammates for their unwavering support. A huge thank you to coach Lara and coach Bubb for this amazing opportunity. Most of all, I want to thank my dad for his constant support and love through my swimming career and the next step, I wouldn’t be where I am without him. Go Owls!!
A rising senior at Riverwood High School in Atlanta, Georgia, Kessell has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Dynamo Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in sprint freestyle and backstroke.
Kessell is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw her drop over two seconds in both the 100 free and 200 free. At the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 5A State Championships in January, she won her first-ever individual state title, clocking 51.41 to win the 100 free, in addition to helping Riverwood take gold in the 200 free relay (24.10 split) for the third-straight season. She also helped her school to sixth in the 400 free relay (55.74) and finished eighth in the 200 free (1:56.89). She wrapped up her season at the SE TNAQ Speedo Southern Premier in March, where she swam her current PB of 1:52.46 in the 200 free in addition to a strong follow up in the 100 free 51.70.
Kesell also boasts PBs of 58.25 and 2:03.33 in the backstroke events from the 2024-25 season; she clocked season bests of 59.58 and 2:06.90 in 2025-26.

Kessell’s current career bests in the 100 free and 200 back would have qualified for the ‘C’ finals, setting her up to be an immediate contributor, and that’s with two full seasons of training ahead before lining up at her first conference meet. Additionally, times of 23.52/1:52.17 were needed to score in the 50/200 free, while 56.13 was needed in the 100 back, meaning she’s already close to being a three-event scoring threat.
Kessell joins Mallie Whiteley, Emily Scargill, Lylah Rigby, Regan Carpenter, Katie Dunfield, and Addison Daugherty in committing to the Owls’ class of 2031 so far.
