CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department held a silent memorial walk for the 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives at Ground Zero on September 11th, 2001. News10NBC’s Garrett Chan was there.
For 3.43 miles along County Road 16, fire departments across Ontario County walked together in unison. Some of the fire departments that took part were Bristol, Hopewell and Naples.
“You’re thinking about what happened 25 years ago. I know where I was when I first learned the news of the towers being hit by the planes. I was walking next to a guy this morning who was born in 2007…to be here to honor firefighters from New York City who died, it just has a bonding effect on us,” Captain Rick Roxin of the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department said.
After a moment of silence, they stepped off at 8:46 a.m., the time the first alarm was transmitted to FDNY following the attack on the North Tower. From Ferris Hills to the Canandaigua Water Treatment Plant and back, dozens of firefighters walked in full gear.
“In a community like this, you’re either are a firefighter, you’re related to a firefighter. Your best friend is a firefighter…every day they’re jumping out of bed. They’re leaving their dinner tables. They’re jumping into their vehicles to help protect our communities,” said Don Cotter, town supervisor of Canandaigua.
Capt. Rick Roxin said the walk shows volunteer firefighters are always there, no matter what challenges they face.
“It’s a calling, first of all. And no one cares, frankly, what somebody does during their work hours. We know that we can count on each other to be there for a call…and it’s because we care about the community and we work hard to do our best,” Roxin said.
Neighbors came out to show their support, including Susan Foose. She worked at the Canandaigua National Bank, and was at the Twin Towers two weeks before the Sept. 11 attacks for a bank meeting.
“And I was supposed to go another week back there for another bank meeting. So we need to remember how very lucky we are during these times. It’s very difficult, but we need to remember we’re very fortunate,” Foose said.
Roxin said while a lot has changed in fire department training and apparatus, what doesn’t change is keeping the memory of the 343 firefighters alive and passing on the values of service and sacrifice to the next generation of firefighters. The department started the tradition eight years ago and hopes more fire departments will take part in the future.
