Odunze appeared in 12 regular season games for the Bears last season, with 44 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns.
With DJ Moore now playing for the Buffalo Bills, Odunze will likely be one of the Bears’ top offensive targets in Johnson’s second year at the helm.
The Bears also are hoping to get defensive lineman Austin Booker in the lineup against the Panthers, as he works through a groin injury that limited him during the preseason. He has been back on the practice field this week, though the team’s first official injury report won’t be issued until Wednesday.
Finally, Johnson gave an update on offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo, who is trying to make a comeback from a torn patellar tendon in his knee that he suffered during the playoffs. Johnson said he “didn’t have a timeline” on Trapilo’s comeback, but said the lineman is working his way back toward full health.
“We want to make sure that he’s maximizing the number of padded opportunities he gets as he’s continuing to get better every single week, I think it’s a matter of time,” he said. “I can’t say it’s in the near future, and yet I know he’s working his tail off. It’s been beyond impressive for him to be where he is today.”
The Bears will continue working at Halas Hall through Friday, with their game set for Sunday in Charlotte against the Panthers.
