For decades, women could eat at The Berghoff, but they were never welcomed inside the bar at the German watering hole and restaurant in Chicago’s Loop.
That changed when Gloria Steinem and a group of female activists challenged the unspoken men-only rule and demanded a drink.
“It’s not the proudest point of Berghoff history, but it is part of it,” said Pete Berghoff, owner of The Berghoff.
Berghoff, the now fourth generation owner of the family business, was only six when the rule was challenged in 1969.
“They wanted to have a drink at the bar and some of the male customers were not all that thrilled of it. They were there after a long day at work and wanted their beer and to relax and go home,” he explained. “There was a bit of a confrontation, I guess someone got bit and ended up having their hand wrapped — that was triaged with a napkin — and there was a bit of a scuffle, but you know, that’s how change happens.”
The change at The Berghoff quickly became the talk of the town, and Berghoff said a news article about the change was displayed on the wall of the bar for the better part of 30 years.
“It’s history. Embrace it, don’t forget it. And don’t repeat it,” he said.
Steinem’s impact on the Chicago bar was just one small achievement in her life.
She started a magazine and used journalism to expose sexism and fought for gender equality — helping more women take positions of power.
Steinem never shied away from controversy or difficulty throughout her life — always pushing for a seat at the table, or a stool at the bar.
