Monroe Community Hospital opens Friendship Place, a 25-bed memory care center for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients in Rochester ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe Community Hospital officially opened Friendship Place on Thursday, a newly renovated 25-bed memory care center designed for those living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

News10NBC has done extensive reporting on the nursing home bed shortage that is deeply impacting the community. A lack of available beds is causing a backlog of patients in our local hospitals.  Finding a spot for anyone is difficult, and finding a spot for someone with memory issues is even harder because there are very strict rules about safety.

Friendship Place was designed to be more of a home and less of a nursing home. The way it looks, and the amenities were all designed with memory loss in mind. “Paint colors, flooring and transitions were intentionally selected to support wayfinding,” Alyssa Tallo says. Tallo is the Executive Health Director at Monroe Community Hospital. The facility also features bio-dynamic lighting, sensory activities, and memory boxes outside each room. “Every decision was made with the goal of creating an environment that works with the people who live here, not against them,” Tallo adds.

“It’s filling a very critical need in the community right now with really a living environment that is second to none,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello tells News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke.

Jennifer Lewke (News10NBC):  “I think a lot of people will probably think… this place is beautiful if I ever need it, but will I have enough money to get in?  How do you balance who gets what beds, are there a certain number saved for Medicaid patients?

Alyssa Tallo: “For us, it’s always based on clinical needs, we always have to be forward thinking that way…While we do hope that we attract every kind of client to this unit there is not going to be any limitation to who is welcome here.”

It cost Monroe Community Hospital $2.7 million to build Friendship Place. $500,000 of that came from a state grant, the rest was covered by Monroe County taxpayers.

“This is a wise investment for Monroe County and for Monroe County taxpayers, there are a lot of families in our community that have loved ones that are facing a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia and they need a place where they can feel comfortable and confident that their loved ones going to get the care they’re going to need so facilities like this need to exist,” Bello says.
