The BBC is looking to save £500m over the next three years, and has already made cuts to the long-running news programme, getting rid of its investigations team and changing the format so it runs for half an hour rather than 45 minutes.
Responding in a statement, a BBC spokesperson said: "We're very proud of Newsnight's success; since its reformat, it has significantly increased its audiences, won an RTS award and is now being moved to a peak-time slot on Friday evenings.
"As we have said, the BBC needs to save £500m over the next three years and BBC News will play its part in contributing to those savings."
In June, the BBC announced it is to cut 550 roles across the corporation’s News, Nations and Content divisions as part of the first phase of its plan to save £500m over the next three years.
The move will also see £80m stripped from commissioning spend across Content, News and Nations, while the BBC will also review broadcast TV channels and radio network portfolio as audiences move further online.
