Between 1978 and 1995, Theodore “Ted” John Kaczynski killed three people and injured dozens more in 16 different bombings of mailboxes. Kaczynski, a former math prodigy and academic, abandonded his career and lived as a recluse in remote Lincoln, Montana. Kaczynski was targeting those he felt were negatively advancing modern technology at the expense of the natural world. He was apprehended in 1996 and convicted and sentenced to several life sentences. Kaczynski died in prison in 2023 at the age of 81.
Known as the “Unabomber,” Kaczynski has been the subject of fascination since his crimes took place decades ago. In 2020, 2.0 Entertainment commissioned a feature film based on Kaczynski. And then six years later, in 2026, the completed film Unabomber was released on Netflix.
Starring Jacob Tremblay, Russell Crowe, and Shailene Woodley, Unabomber has proved to be immensely popular amongst Netflix users and is currently the number one movie globally on the streaming behemoth.
Following the life of Kaczynski starting in his teenage years in 1958, Unabomber explores the evolution of Kaczynski’s mind and mental illness, leading up to his crimes and subsequent arrest. The film alternates between Kaczynski’s life as a 16-year-old math prodigy studying at Harvard, and the 1990s FBI investigation determined to bring him to justice.
Despite being the top movie currently on Netflix, critically speaking, Unabomber has failed to land. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently only holds a 25% and has an average rating of 4.8/10. On Roger Ebert, movie critic Robert Daniels said, “It aims to add psychological depth to the domestic terrorist’s upbringing but doesn’t rise above being a shallow made-for-TV movie exclusively composed of tawdry decisions.”
Unabomber is out now and streaming exclusively on Netflix.
