Nothing proves that everything is fine like the media department of the biggest sporting governing body on the planet lurking in the replies of media outlets telling them that their stories are “pure fiction”. Fifa is in firefighting mode after its president was caught playing with matches and several gallons of crude oil.
If, as we are told, Donald Trump is prepared to go out to bat for Gianni Infantino it seems a fair bargain. Fifa’s president did back the US president’s politics, move a Fifa office into Trump’s building, overturn a red card and keep the actual World Cup trophy in the Oval Office. I’m just one autocratic leader, stood in front of another autocratic leader, asking him to get me out of a hole. We should hope that it does not work.
Today I feel… unemployed – that is the only appropriate ending here: righteous irony. Infantino has been humiliated, disgraced and exposed, but only through removing him entirely from this gross pantomime of his own creation can the most powerful governing body in sport move forward.
Infantino’s rotten core has infected his organisation. We can never believe that he will change, see the error of his ways and become a benevolent leader. You cannot clip Infantino’s wings. His ego and ambition will not sit snugly in a small box with a locked lid. As such, he must be removed from office immediately.
Infantino is still dangerous – make no mistake. If you believe that he has abandoned all hope of this plan and will not have other potential irons in the same fire, I have some magic beans for sale and please be assured the beanstalks will be monstrous. More importantly: he does not deserve the second chance.
Every day Infantino remains is a stain on Fifa itself, because the sheer force of his self-promotion has blurred the lines between the organisation and one individual. Infantino is Fifa – Fifa is Infantino. If that sounds unfair to those who work there and do genuine good, ask any person on any street for a review. He is bringing you down.
Infantino cannot be allowed to get away with this (Photo: Getty)If not, every slogan looks empty. Every promise you make is an empty vessel. We will see your organisation’s lips moving and all we will hear are reasons to be cynical. This is Fifa’s only chance to show that it is truly separate from its president. Fail to do so and all trust will disintegrate. To those within Fifa who work tirelessly and well: you must manoeuvre.
We also need to send a message to those in charge of sporting governance: you are not getting it and we are sick of it. You are supposed to work for us and the sport itself, not for yourselves. How dare you lose sight of that ethic.
You are paid incredibly well and we stomach it, because the responsibility demands excellence. But your job is not an echo chamber of self-serving, private jets and rubbing shoulders with world leaders. You are not paid to position yourself for greater wealth and celebrity. You exist in a position of honour and privilege that should provoke humility not arrogance. You are not kings or queens, but servants.
Now that energy must persevere. The best and the easiest time to remove Infantino was yesterday. The longer he clings to power, the firmer his grip. Wales and England are the first nations to withdraw all support – others must follow en masse. Mealy mouthing ends in nothing.
Infantino will retain swathes of electoral support. Even those who have railed against the World Cup sell-off may be loathed to leave his side. Fifa’s president still has support among Asian, African and South American nations. That only increases the onus on everyone else to shout their mutiny from the rooftops.

Assemble your votes of no confidence. Maintain your threats of boycott not just if the plans to sell off international football are abandoned, but if their grim architect stays too. This is a shot at a different future. And it might be our only one.
Fifa’s president may also learn the danger of a friendship with Trump. For now the World Cup is fresh in the mind and the Trump-Infantino bromance may carry weight. But America will move on and so will its president. Trump has repeatedly proven himself willing to change his principles with the wind if he believes that associations are causing him political collateral damage.
While Infantino has power, he has use to Trump. While his plans to carve up the World Cup and sell it off piecemeal had the approval of the Trump administration because it may benefit their own allies, Infantino was in the club. If both fail, and Infantino loses the support of all around him, don’t expect Trump to stick around to hold his hand through the tears.
