“Flowers in the Rain” was a 1967 song released by an English rock band called The Move. Even though the song never charted in the United States, it was a major hit in the UK. It rose all the way to number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was also the first song to ever be played by BBC Radio One.
The Move released several more popular songs while they were together, including “Blackberry Way,” “I Can Hear the Grass Grow,” and “(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree.” However, the band broke up in 1972 when several members left to focus on the Electric Light Orchestra. Three members of the band—Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan—co-founded ELO.
When asked about whether The Move and ELO were meant to coexist at the same time, Bevan told Louder Sound, “The Move were signed to EMI Harvest when we did what turned out to be the last ever single, California Man [1972], which was a massive hit. So EMI were saying, ‘We’ve got this hit band, and you want to do this thing called Electric Light Orchestra?’ They weren’t very keen on the idea. The recording costs that were involved in the first ELO album were made from an advance we got for The Move. So they did coexist for a little while.”

Lynne also spoke about the decision to transition from The Move to ELO in a Louder Sound interview. He said, “By the time I joined in ’68, The Move were doing cabaret, and I didn’t want to be a part of that. Roy and I had been talking about the idea of ELO for months. So we made those Move albums [1970’s Shazam and 71’s Message From The Country] to help pay for ELO.”
Electric Light Orchestra was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. They had several huge hits, including “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head,” “Evil Woman,” and “Telephone Line.”
