During BAFTA’s Life in Pictures event in London on Monday night, Tom Cruise earned spontaneous applause after a six-minute monologue about Artificial Intelligence and creativity. He said that, even in the face of AI threats, “people want human experience.”
“There is nothing like human,” Cruise said before talking about cinemas vs. streaming. While he said that he doesn’t have anything against streaming platforms, he explained that seeing a movie in theaters is “a different art form.”
Cruise pointed to this summer’s series of blockbuster films, saying that “People want that experience. They’re going to movie theaters.” He added, “I always believe in humanity.”
“What you put attention on, you give life,” Cruise said, expressing that he doesn’t want to see “craftspeople who dedicate their careers to creating movies” lose their jobs, Deadline reported.
“People wanna see real things,” he said. Cruise concluded, saying that creatives must “keep creating.”
This isn’t the first time that Cruise has been involved in AI conversations. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise Zoomed into a SAG-AFTRA negotiating session in June 2023, where the union expressed its concerns about the future of AI in Hollywood. Vanity Fair wrote that Cruise and the actors’ union pushed for new guidelines around the use of generative AI in film and television.
“[They] reportedly focused on making sure that performers are properly compensated if their likeness is used by the technology, and that those likenesses can’t be used without proper consent,” Vanity Fair wrote.
Cruise’s latest film, Digger, is set to release in theaters on October 2. Cruise stars as an oil tycoon named Digger Rockwell, who has to become humanity’s savior in the face of an environmental disaster he caused.
During the BAFTA event, Cruise said that he’s “never read a movie like this.”
“It’s the most original film and one of the most moving films I’ve ever seen,” he said.
