Australian sprinter Isaac Cooper has resigned from his role on the Dolphins’ athletes leadership group after failing to attend the final session of the Commonwealth Games and reportedly going out drinking in Glasgow instead.
Cooper, 22, had qualified for the final of the men’s 100 backstroke on Tuesday night, posting the eighth-fastest time in the semi-finals, but was a surprising scratch from the event the following day. He swam the lead-off leg of the Australian men’s prelim 4×100 medley relay on Wednesday morning, but was absent during the evening session—even if a swimmer is done competing, they are expected to attend and cheer on their teammates.
According to Tom Decent of the Sydney Morning Herald, Cooper’s absence resulted in him being “hauled in by team officials and spoken to by Australian head coach Rohan Taylor.”
Decent also reported that other Australian swimmers were surprised of Cooper’s absence, both at finals and a post-session wrap-up meeting, especially since he had recently been appointed to the Australian team’s leadership group.
Three anonymous sources told Decent that Cooper was out drinking in Glasgow while his teammates were competing, and he was also seen drinking at Australia’s team headquarters.
He did not attend a training session the following day.
The Australian team did not have any restrictions in place precluding athletes from drinking after they were done competing, Decent added.
Cooper has travelled with the team to the United States in preparation for the upcoming Pan Pacific Championships, where he’ll be allowed to compete.
“Isaac did not attend the final night of the swimming competition or final team meeting in Glasgow which is in conflict with team expectations,” Swimming Australia said in a statement. “Isaac has since voluntarily stood down from the team’s athlete leadership group.
“Swimming Australia will not be making any further comment on this issue. We look forward to watching Isaac compete at [this month’s] Pan Pacific Championships.”
Prior to the Commonwealth Games, Cooper and Taylor spoke on the growth he’s had over the past four years.
In 2022, Cooper was sent home from an Australian team training camp in Spain following some “wellbeing challenges” that included the use of medication, Swimming Australia reported at the time. The training camp was in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
“He’s grown up in himself,” Taylor said of Cooper prior to the competition. “He’s really worked on what it means to have a positive impact on the team. I’ve got a really strong relationship with Isaac and I’m very proud of the young man he is.
Cooper added: “I’ve had in my mind for the last four years I want to be able to go to these Commonwealth Games, stand on top [of the podium] and be able to turn everything around and have something to show for it.”
Cooper finished the 2026 Commonwealth Games with one gold medal, earned by virtue of him swimming the preliminary backstroke leg of the Aussie men’s 4×100 medley relay, and he placed 6th individually in the men’s 50 back to go along with his withdrawal from the final of the 100 back.
