This offseason was long but eventful, and now it’s almost time to reap the benefits of players moving around and new draft picks coming in. Well, almost all players. The former All-Star didn’t expect to become a Bull, and he even mentioned that himself in the video.“It was a team I wasn’t expecting to be a part of during free agency. When they were giving me a list of names, they got added into the mix probably the third or fourth phone call,” said Powell. “I was shocked. I was surprised just because of the youth they have on the team. And I feel like they were going into a young rebuild mode. But I was super excited to get on the phone with Tiago and talk about my role and how they view me, [and] how they looked at me over the course of my career.”
Having a former player as a coach definitely helps with recruiting, that’s for sure. And I genuinely believe Powell could be a great veteran presence for the Bulls without having to sacrifice his production. That’s probably a big reason why the Bulls beat out the competition to sign him. NBA free agency is in such a weird place right now. We’re a week away from training camps kicking off, and restricted free agent Jalen Duren is still without a contract. Yesterday, Shams Charania of ESPN reported that the Pistons and Jalen Duren are still at an “impasse,” with his situation remaining “up in the air” and it being “questionable” whether he’ll even show up for Pistons training camp.“Over the course of this offseason, his offer from the Pistons has been around the $180 to $190M over 5 years range. And that has also included incentives like weight clauses… And I am told right now the Pistons offer to Jalen Duren is $200M over 5 years.”

At this point, it feels like this is about ego or a desire to leave Detroit. Because even if he takes the qualifying offer this season and signs a max contract with another team next season, he’ll still end up making less than what Detroit currently has on the table. The Bulls were potentially a team in the market for restricted free agents like Jalen Duren. In fact, we’d heard a few rumblings about that. But Bryson Graham didn’t touch that situation with a 10-foot pole, and he’s looking like a genius for doing so. Another place where Bryson may have dodged a bullet was in the second round. Now, I, like many others, was on team “draft in the second round.” The two names at the top of my list that I would’ve loved to see the Bulls take were Meleek Thomas and Caleb Wilson’s college teammate, Henri Veesaar. Now, I still believe the Bulls should have tried to draft Meleek Thomas. But yesterday, the Atlanta Hawks announced that Veesaar had torn his ACL and would miss the entire 2026-27 season.
