Kappa Delta Chi, a Latina-multicultural sorority, hopes to foster a more unified and inclusive campus with a new chapter coming to the University this fall.
With 17 members in their chartering class, the group will complete its induction in the upcoming fall semester with a pinning ceremony and new member presentation. They will begin their next wave of recruitment in the spring and each following semester.
Maritza Colin, a 5th-year senior majoring in neuroscience and chartering president of Kappa Delta Chi, began the research process of starting a chapter her sophomore year.
“I really wanted to join a sorority, but there wasn’t one on campus that I felt was a right match for me, and that was a huge thing for me,” Colin said. “I was talking to a staff member that I worked with, who had worked at different universities in different states, and she told me about the Latina sorority that existed that I had no idea about.”
Kappa Delta Chi will be the University’s first multicultural sorority since the chartering of Delta Xi Phi in 2003, which has since become inactive. It will also be the only active chapter of Kappa Delta Chi in the state of Alabama, as Auburn University’s chapter is currently dormant.
“We’re really going to be transforming waters through the entire state, especially after SB 129, which is a law that’s trying to stop things like Kappa Delta Chi from coming to the state,” said Amelia Diaz, a senior majoring in biology and treasurer of the chapter.
While Kappa Delta Chi is Latina founded and focused, it is not exclusive to Latina women. The group hopes to expand their reach to women of different cultural backgrounds, united by their core values of unity, honesty, integrity and leadership.
Outside of their core values, the group will emphasize academic success above all else, starting with a minimum GPA requirement of 2.7. Additionally, they will focus on serving Tuscaloosa’s Latino community and forming relationships with other Greek organizations on campus.
“We really want to establish a strong relationship with the Latino communities around Tuscaloosa,” Colin said. “I think a tradition would be maybe buying food for a fundraiser from our local Latino bakery, or helping out a Muslim church [mosque]. Just anything that can help our women connect with the multicultural areas around campus that we don’t usually see in collaboration with other organizations.”
The emerging members hope to create a welcoming, inclusive environment on campus in the midst of anti-DEI policies nationwide and across Alabama, such as the discontinuation of the National Hispanic Recognition Award, which used to automatically grant students the UA Competitive Achievement Scholarship, including four years of tuition, one year of housing and a $1,000 stipend per year.
“I think that discouraged a lot of people from wanting to come to the University or even wanting to make a space for themselves,” said Cordelia Hanson, a senior majoring in social work and vice president of Kappa Delta Chi. “Being a chartering member is really important to me and for everyone who feels discouraged right now.”
While national rules prevent Kappa Delta Chi from recruiting beyond their current founding members until spring 2027, the chapter will table at “Get On Board Day” on Aug. 27 to introduce themselves to campus and spread information and awareness about their chapter. The chapter’s Instagram account is named after the sorority’s national gemstone, the emerald.
“It seems pretty exciting,” said Geraldine Flores, a sophomore majoring in political science and secretary of Kappa Delta Chi. “That’s why we want to bring it to UA, not just for us, but for future generations and building that foundation for people with Latino and multicultural backgrounds and helping them have a space at UA.”
