It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Ty Burrell playing Phil Dunphy on Modern Family. But before the actor made the lovable, goofy dad one of television’s most memorable sitcom characters, another comedian had the opportunity to take the role: Rob Corddry.
Corddry, 55, known for his work on The Daily Show and HBO’s Ballers, recently opened up about passing on the ABC comedy during an appearance on Obsessed: The Podcast. And looking back, he has a pretty memorable way of describing what he missed.
“There is one that I said no to that turned out to be a massive show,” Corddry said.
“And I would probably be doing this interview from a helicopter made out of gold. That was Modern Family.”
The actor confirmed that he had been offered the part of Phil, which ultimately went to Burrell, 59. The casting decision came at a busy point in Corddry’s career, shortly after he left The Daily Show. He was weighing the ABC sitcom against Ballers, the HBO comedy starring Dwayne Johnson.
“I chose HBO over network TV,” Corddry explained.
“So I made that choice. I never regretted it. HBO pays very well, but it’s not paying whatever that was at ABC.”
Corddry also said he had spoken with Burrell about the casting decision, which made him comfortable discussing it publicly.
The story had actually surfaced years earlier.
In the 2020 book Modern Family: The Untold Oral History of One of Television’s Groundbreaking Sitcoms, executive producer Jeffrey Morton recalled recommending Corddry for the part. Morton said Corddry turned down the opportunity and later told him, “Well, I guess that wasn’t my best decision.”
Burrell went on to play Phil for all 11 seasons of Modern Family, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards for the role. The series became one of ABC’s biggest comedy hits, making the part a particularly memorable one to pass up.
Corddry, meanwhile, spent five seasons playing Joe Krutel on Ballers and continued building a career in comedy and drama.
