ONTARIO COUNTY, N.Y. — Ontario County is creating a registry to ensure that pets don’t fall into the hands of people convicted of animal abuse.

County lawmakers have created legislation directing the sheriff’s office to create the registry. The county’s Board of Supervisors says the registry aims to prevent those with convictions from adopting from animal shelters or farms and prevent them from being hired by employers that work closely with animals.

The registry will include people convicted of animal fighting, injuring animals, failing to provide sustenance, abandoning animals, stealing companion animals, and other violations.
