That has been the enduring appeal of Carlos Ruiz Zafón's The Shadow of the Wind. Originally published in Spanish in 2001 before being translated into dozens of languages, the novel has become one of the defining works of modern literary fiction. Its lasting influence has now been recognized once again with a place on Goodreads' list of the Best Books of the 21st Century, a ranking voted on by the site's global reading community.
Set in postwar Barcelona, The Shadow of the Wind follows a young boy named Daniel Sempere, who discovers a mysterious novel in the hidden "Cemetery of Forgotten Books." As he searches for information about its elusive author, Julián Carax, Daniel is drawn into a decades-spanning mystery involving love, betrayal, obsession and family secrets.
Readers around the world quickly embraced the story.

"What I did was take what for me is very important, which is take all the great ambition in all those nineteenth-century novels, but try to reconstruct those big novels – the Tolstoy, the Dickens, the Wilkie Collins – but try to reconstruct all of that with all the narrative elements that the twentieth century has given us, from the grammar of cinema, from multimedia, from general fiction, from everything that is out there, to create a much more intense reading experience for the readers," Zafón said in an interview. "So that was the idea, and that was the experiment to create with The Shadow of the Wind."
"Now more than ever, I believe it is up to us to decide if we want to think by ourselves, or if we want to accept and submit to what others would rather have us believe," Zafón told Book Browse. "I'd say TV is a very powerful medium, which can be used, and sometimes it is used, to accomplish great things. Unfortunately, those are exceptions to the rule. But blaming TV as an abstract entity is nonsensical. It's our hand on the remote. There's a world out there outside the tube. Life's short: Wake up and live."
