Dansby Swanson's RBI rampage against Mets lands him in historic company ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson hasn’t had the best season by any stretch, but he’s currently on an all-time hot streak that’s landed him a place in team history.

Swanson entered play on June 17 with a paltry .175 batting average, a slugging percentage of .306 and 28 RBI’s on the season. Since then, he has been positively destroying opposing pitching.

That run of play culminated with an absolutely wild doubleheader against the New York Mets on Wednesday. In the first game, all Swanson did was hit a grand slam and a three-run home run, helping the Cubs to a 10-3 win in the opening game. In the nightcap he wasn’t able to hit a home run, but he still had four RBI’s and a triple as the Cubs once again romped to a 10-5 victory and a doubleheader sweep.

Swanson also had a home run and four RBI’s in the opening game of the series against the Mets, and that explosion of offense has landed him in historic company.

According to Sports Reference’s Stathead tool and MLB.com, Swanson’s 15 RBI’s in the series against the Mets are tied for the most in a single series in Cubs history (at least since RBI’s became an official stat in 1920), tying him with Kiki Cuyler, who had 15 runs batted in during a 1932 five-game series.

Swanson will still have one more game to break that record, as the Cubs and Mets are set to square off again on Thursday.

The 11 RBI’s Swanson had in the doubleheader against the Mets are the most by a player in a double-dip since Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals racked up an astonishing 13 during one doubleheader in Sept. 1993, according to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs.

Swanson entered the team’s June 17 game against the Colorado Rockies with 28 RBI’s on the season, a .176 batting average and a .318 slugging percentage.

After Wednesday’s doubleheader, he now has 46 RBI’s, a .202 batting average and a slugging percentage of .385, with his OPS climbing by 90 points in the team’s last six games.

Over that stretch Swanson is 11-for-23, with four home runs, 18 RBI’s and a pair of doubles. He has also scored eight runs during that time.

Thursday marks the official halfway point of the season for the Cubs, and they’ll face the Mets in their series finale at Citi Field. Matthew Boyd is going to return to the Cubs’ rotation for the game, and he’ll face a tough challenge in Mets hurler Freddy Peralta.

First pitch is set for 6:10 p.m. Central time.
