The Egyptian government has developed a comprehensive plan to secure the country’s natural gas needs during the summer months, anticipating any potential declines or disruptions in the ongoing supply from abroad, especially after Israel reduced its gas supplies by 23 percent, an official Egyptian governmental source confirmed.
The source said that the government is treating the energy sector as a top priority, particularly given the anticipated surge in electricity consumption during the summer months.
According to the source, the relevant authorities began implementing proactive measures months ago to secure supplies and prevent any impact on the national electricity grid.
The government has diversified its gas import sources recently, especially following the global oil crisis, by importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from international markets and building up additional reserves to bridge the gap between domestic production and increasing consumption, the source added.
He pointed out that the government has also developed a plan to increase reliance on liquid fuels, particularly heavy fuel oil and diesel, to operate some power plants during peak periods, with the aim of easing pressure on natural gas consumption and ensuring a stable electricity supply nationwide.
“Egypt relies on a mix of domestic production and imports, and also has multiple alternatives to deal with any supply shortages, especially since domestic natural gas consumption currently exceeds six billion cubic feet per day, while domestic production hovers around 4.1 to 4.2 billion cubic feet per day,” the source explained.
Expert opinion
A petroleum and energy expert and Dean of the Faculty of Energy at the British University in Egypt, Attia Attia, said that there is no cause for concern regarding a reduction or cessation of Israeli gas imports to Egypt.
He noted that the government has concluded a series of new contracts and agreements in recent months to import LNG as part of a proactive plan to secure the needs of the local market and power plants before the summer season.
Attia explained that the move came given the decline in domestic production and the rise in consumption rates, in addition to addressing any potential decrease in imported gas quantities.
He also noted that the Ministry of Petroleum is currently working on implementing a large-scale import program to secure the needs of the local market.
