Martha Stewart is addressing her Halloween costume controversy yet again. In a new interview with Today’s Craig Melvin (who also got pulled into Martha’s mess), Stewart talks candidly about her major misstep.
The lifestyle guru faced serious backlash after posting a since-deleted pic of herself on Instagram, dressed as a homeless person, holding a sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”
The following day she told Page Six, “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.” She added, “Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic.”
She later apologized, writing on Instagram, “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”
But the apology tour didn’t end there. On Friday, November 6, she went on Today, speaking out publicly about the issue in a new interview with Melvin. Of course, the Today co-host was already part of the story.
TMZ obtained a video of Stewart, while onstage at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando, Florida, blaming Melvin for her costume choice, saying, “He spilled chocolate all over my sweater that I was going to wear on Halloween night. And when I picked up the sweater I said, ‘Oh God it’s so dirty, and I only have 10 minutes to get dressed for this Halloween party.’ So the easiest costume was to get dressed up as you know…a bum.”
Fast-forward to Friday, and Stewart sat down with Melvin, apologizing to the co-host and everyone else. She explained that she was very busy at her farm on Halloween day, “doing a lot of gardening,” and that she “really hadn’t planned a Halloween costume this year.”
She continued, saying to Melvin, “But I didn’t have a costume because you had spilled some chocolate on my white sweater, and I don’t blame you at all. That was a joke that I said I blamed you. It was stupid. And then I, tone-deaf or whatever I was. According to my grandson, I was tone-deaf.”
Melvin quickly stepped in with, “Well, not just your grandson.” Stewart replied, “Oh, no, no. But that was, he saw the picture first. Because I sent it to him. And I said, ‘What do you think?’ Tone-deaf, he said. And it was just stupid. And I apologize. Because I was not making fun of anybody or making light of the great problems that face our country.”
Stewart went on to say, “And I certainly hope our new administration oh, takes big steps to repair a lot of the damage that’s being done. And the poor, and the hungry, and everyone else is taken care of better.”
Melvin pressed Stewart on why he was “dragged into it,” and she explained the reference to him again, saying, “I was making a joke. I was giving a talk, and I just made a joke that you had spilled chocolate on me so I couldn’t wear that costume which I had planned to wear on Halloween night to this party…And of course they picked up on that. Because you’re you.”
So what lessons has Stewart learned? She shared, “Pay closer attention to social issues. Be aware. I’m aware of all those social issues as you can imagine, and I care desperately about all the problems facing us. But I made a mistake. I mean, I was stupid. What else can I say? I’m so sorry, and I hope that my followers and my fans, and the rest of America forgives me for doing something that was not meant in any way to be a bad thing.”
