The salty and cheesy small cracker, known as Goldfish, has kept children and adults of all ages happy and satisfied for years since its release in America in the 1960s, and it was first created as a heartfelt gift in Switzerland.

Anyone can name the top five most common and popular snacks sold in supermarkets across the country. One of them is Golfish, “the snack that smiles back,” manufactured by Peppridge Farms. It originally started with one simple flavor in Europe before expanding into what feels like hundreds of flavors and versions in today’s market.

Before landing in America, Goldfish was enjoyed for years in Switzerland thanks to culinary inventor Oscar J. Kambly. According to the Tasting Table, Kambly developed the snack as a birthday gift to his wife. They were shaped into a fish design because his wife was a Pisces, with the astrological sign matching the snack’s look.

“Right after the birthday breakfast, he went to his office and sketched the amusing, cheerful little goldfish,” said Chantal van der Voort, a representative of the Kambly company.

“He called for the technician who made a hand mold that same morning, and in the afternoon, he baked the first ‘Goldfish’ himself and presented them to his dear wife that evening.”

Kamberly met his wife in 1906 and moved to a farming village where they began their careers as bakers. Their business took off, and they soon outgrew their bakery and opened a biscuit-making factory. Before developing Goldfish, Kamberly and his wife created the world’s thinnest pastry known as the Butterfly. It was some years later that he crafted the salty fish-shaped snack for his wife.

How did Goldfish land in America?

Margaret Loreta Rudkin was the founder of Pepperidge Farms after growing up baking with her grandmother and starting to bake bread. Due to her son’s asthma and severe allergies, she took one of her grandmother’s recipes and developed a stone-ground wheat bread that was nutritious and safe.

Pepperidge Farms soon flourished into a growing food business when Rudkin travelled to Switzerland on vacation one year. She happened to stumble upon the salty snack created by Kamberly, and they struck a deal to bring the product to America. Goldfish was introduced to the American food market in 1962 with five flavors.

The company started with Lightly Salted (Original), Cheese, Barbecue, Pizza, and Smoky. It wasn’t until 1966 that Cheddar Cheese, the most popular, was introduced as a flavor. Goldfish soon became a snacking staple during any occasion. Even Julia Child loved the snack and would have a bowl of it during Thanksgiving alongside her reverse martini cocktails.

Many may also know Goldfish for its marketing of sunglasses and a smile, but the smile wasn’t added until decades later, in 1997. Pepperidge Farm has since innovated the product with limited-edition flavors, flavor varieties, and different formulas. The snack comes in various forms, from a sweet treat to collaborations with other food brands like Frank’s RedHot.

The Campbell Soup Company credits Goldfish’s long-lasting success to its ongoing innovations that have gone far beyond the “classic” flavor created by Kamberly.
