Alabama women’s basketball put on a defensive masterclass in the Crimson Tide’s win over LSU New Orleans on Wednesday night.
The Crimson Tide began their dominant showing with nine steals and three blocks in the first quarter as they took a massive 30-6 lead. Star guard Ace Austin had two of those steals.
The team didn’t slow down in the second quarter, ending the half with 17 steals and five blocks that contributed to a score of 59-24.
Six steals and three blocks were racked up in the third quarter to push the total to 23 steals and nine blocks, as Alabama led 87-33 at the end of the period.
The fourth and final quarter was no different, and the Crimson Tide finished the game with 26 steals and 12 blocks en route to a lopsided 118-45 win.
Coach Pauline Love was blunt about the team’s defensive mindset heading into the game.
“Toughness. That’s the word for the week,” she said.
Senior forward Caitlin Staley led the team with four blocks, with junior guard Leah Brooks not far behind with three rejections. Sophomore guard Alayna West put on a show with six steals, with fellow sophomore guard Tianna Chambers chipping in five steals.
“Offense wins games, but defense wins championships, and I think that’s just the mindset I always have,” West said.
Alabama will look to continue its strong defensive start to 2026 on Thursday, as it hosts Alabama A&M at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
