Tom Hanks has spent decades making some of the most beloved movies of all time, but when it comes to television, one show stands out to him above the rest.
As reported by Far Out Magazine, the two-time Oscar winner was asked about streaming and how it has changed the way audiences watch. He said streaming “works great for some things” and is “perhaps a handicap for others,” and then pointed to one example of it at its best.
“One of the greatest things I have watched in the last few years was the five-part HBO series Chernobyl,” Hanks said. “It was fantastic.”
Released in 2019, Chernobyl tells the story of the 1986 nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union and the chaotic aftermath. Created and written by Craig Mazin, who later co-created HBO’s The Last of Us, the series follows the scientists and officials trying to contain the catastrophe while the government works to cover up how bad it really is.
Jared Harris stars as scientist Valery Legasov, with Stellan Skarsgård as Soviet official Boris Shcherbina and Emily Watson as Ulana Khomyuk, a nuclear physicist created for the show to represent the many scientists who helped investigate the disaster.
The series was a hit with critics and viewers alike. It holds a 95% critics’ score and a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It won 10 Emmy Awards, including outstanding limited series, as well as Golden Globes for best limited series and for Skarsgård’s performance. Harris also won a BAFTA for best actor, and the show’s haunting score by composer Hildur Guðnadóttir earned a Grammy.
It isn’t surprising that Hanks was impressed. The actor has a long history with true-story TV. He executive-produced and helped bring to life HBO’s World War II miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
With just five episodes, Chernobyl can be watched in a single weekend. The series is streaming on HBO Max.
