TV and film icon Gary Sinise has been focusing on his family amid health struggles for the last six years, after he decided to step away from acting for a bit. But in a new interview, as he reflects on how much his life has changed since then, Sinise revealed what exactly would convince him to come back.
Sinise stopped acting in 2020 to wholly focus on his wife, Moira Harris, and his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, both of whom were battling different types of cancer. In 2018, Harris was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, and only a few months later, Mac was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer known as chordoma.
By 2020, both Harris and Mac had been undergoing treatment for a long time, and while Harris was eventually able to go into remission, Mac’s cancer unfortunately got worse. After Sinise finished his role on 13 Reasons Why, he stepped back from his career to become Mac’s main caregiver.
The family continued trying different treatments for Mac as he underwent various procedures to try to stop his cancer, but in January 2024, he died at the age of 33. Since Mac’s death, Sinise has continued to honor him in various ways, largely through his nonprofit, The Gary Sinise Foundation.
But as time goes on, fans are consistently curious to see if Sinise will ever return to acting, and according to a new interview with the Forrest Gump star, it’s not out of the question.
Speaking with People in connection with his upcoming memoir, Graceful Warrior: The True Story of a Son, a Father and a Family Who Carried Each Other Through, Sinise declared, “Will I go back to acting? I may for the right thing with the right people — if it feels right.”

“Do I miss it? There are times when I do,” he added. But he noted that all of the charity work and similar projects he’s doing right now is “so fulfilling.”
Sinise also emphasized that, just as it was in 2020 when he stopped acting, family is still his priority: “I don’t think I can do the kind of thing I used to do, which is pick up and go away for two or three months… I can’t do that anymore. Nor would I want to leave the family for that long.”
Currently, Sinise, his wife, their two daughters, Ella and Sophie, and their grandchildren all live near each other in Tennessee.
