Two rounds of showers and storms were in the Chicago forecast Monday, with severe weather chances bringing the risk of damaging winds and hail, heavy downpours and even the chance for an isolated tornado.
The first round, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, gets underway about 9 a.m., as a cluster of showers and storms moves east into Illinois.
According to Roman, the morning round will last until about 2 p.m. Some storms could contain gusty winds and heavy downpours, though severe weather was not expected.
The greater chance for storms to turn severe, Roman said, was during the second round, between about 4 and 11 p.m.
At that time, the entire Chicago area will be under a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of three. Roman said the area was downgraded from a “moderate” risk, with the tornado threat now expected to remain further south, in central and southern Illinois.
Still, all weather hazards were at play, Roman said, including quarter-sized hail, winds up the 70 mph and heavy downpours.
According to the National Weather Service, the highest tornado risk remained mainly south of the Kankakee and Illinois River Valleys.
