Is it time for you to renew your TSA PreCheck benefits?
The Transportation Security Administration has made headlines in recent weeks for its controversial decision to remove chairs from airport checkpoints nationwide, requiring all officers to stand while checking passengers’ IDs.
This move was addressed by TSA Administrator David Cummins during his recent keynote address, per Federal News Network, a speech that also touched on upgrades coming to airports around the U.S. — one of which centering on the passenger lanes themselves.
The agency now has plans to roll out new PreCheck lanes to seven airports over the next six weeks in an effort to double the passenger throughput, View From the Wing reports. Here are some of the lanes’ features that are supposedly coming:
A body scanner will now screen you, even though PreCheck has typically used walk-through metal detectors in the past. An electronic gate will now verify your identity, with self-service verification using facial matching and a gate that controls access. Software will now decide which bag images need an officer’s attention, with a so-called “image on alarm” that uses automated threat detection to flag screeners to review specific images (instead of examining every bag image).Cummins also said in his recent keynote that “there’s some additional things” travelers will be able to bring through the new checkpoint system — but he declined to say what they are.
No Flight, No Boarding Pass, No Problem
In other airport news, TSA last month launched Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a new program that allows eligible TSA PreCheck members to enter the secure side of participating airports even when they aren’t flying.
The program is free, but you’ll need to apply ahead of time and receive approval before heading to the airport.
The program is designed to bring back some of the airport traditions that largely disappeared after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when access to secure airport areas became much more restricted. Find out more here.
