Hines Ward has rooting interest in Jordyn Tyson’s landing spot, reveals WR would’ve played in 2025 CFP semifinal ...Middle East

TEMPE — When Jordyn Tyson attends the first round of the NFL Draft on April 23 in Pittsburgh, he’ll have some familiar faces with him. One of those faces will feel right at home in the Steel City.

Arizona State wide receivers coach Hines Ward — entering his third season in the role — is joining Tyson for the festivities in his old stomping grounds to support his first WR1 at ASU making the next step in his career.

Ward, who played 14 seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, admitted his bias that if Tyson was still on the board when Pittsburgh gets its turn to pick at No. 21 overall, “hell yeah” the coach would want to see Tyson in the black and gold.

“Wherever God wants him to be, it’ll be. And of course, I’m a little biased. … But I’m excited just to see,” Ward said. “I tell all the scouts and all the teams, whatever team ends up drafting him, you’re going to get a winner. I know the work that he’s put into it.”

He’s shared some laughs with Tyson over how the narrative has painted the receiver as someone who’s not durable or not physical all because of the business side of the NFL. Ward perceives it as teams trying to get players “as cheap as possible.”

The game-winning drive against Texas Tech where Tyson had four catches for 55 yards, including a 33-yard pickup on fourth down, all after the hamstring issue first popped up is when Ward learned everything he needed to know.

“Listen, there’s a fluke injury with his collarbone, like three guys fell on him.” the coach said. “The hamstring, that happens at the wide receiver position. But what I found out about JT and the guts that he had to come back, the resiliency to come back in that Texas Tech game, when he popped it in the third quarter, I tried to pull him out. And a lot of scouts didn’t know the story.

“I was like, ‘No, it ain’t worth it.’ He said, ‘Coach, I love my brothers. I don’t know what’s going to happen. If this is going to be my last game, I want to do all I can. Even if I can’t run the route.’ And he single-handedly on that last drive led us down all the way and and helped us win that game. And that’s where I learned a lot about JT’s toughness and who he is as a person. It sounded a lot like myself as a player.”

Tyson’s draft range appears to be the middle of the first round, anywhere from the Los Angeles Rams at No. 13 to the Cleveland Browns at No. 24, according to recent mock drafts tracked by NFL Mock Draft Database. If he’s still on the board at No. 21, we know where Ward’s mind will be.

Jordyn Tyson would’ve been healthy in time for 2025 CFP semifinal

The “what if” element from the 2025 Peach Bowl inadvertently got an extra helping from Ward.

Cam Skattebo’s heroic effort to make that a contest after ASU looked out of it early — notably without Tyson in the lineup due to the collarbone — likely ends with ASU on top if the late targeting call on a throw to Melquan Stovall was made.

Some speculated after seeing Tyson not wearing a sling when he was sitting courtside at a Phoenix Suns game with then-quarterback Sam Leavitt a few weeks ahead of the bowl game that perhaps the receiver was making good time in his recovery and would be ready.

However, Ward said on Tuesday that Tyson would’ve been back for the ensuing College Football Playoff semifinal matchup against eventual champion Ohio State in Arlington, where the Sun Devils had just won the Big 12 Championship about a month earlier.

The Buckeyes beat Texas 28-14, pulling away after entering the fourth quarter in a 14-all tie.
